Barbaresco is one of Italy's most prestigious red wines, produced in Piedmont it is often called the "queen" of Italian wines. The 3 main villages that are allowed to produce Barbaresco DOCG wine are the villages of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso.
This is a day trip where you pass two of these villages in a breathtakingly beautiful wine landscape. The entire area is protected by UNESCO.
Due to the slightly milder climate near the Tanaro River, the grapes ripen faster in Barbaresco, which produces softer wines that can often be drunk earlier than in the Barolo area.
Program
09:00 Departure by car from Podere Tonette.
Set your GPS to the village of Barbaresco.
Parking can be a bit tricky but it usually works out so you park on one of the streets.
It's 58 km and takes just under 60 minutes to drive.
Barbaresco Village
10:00 Arrival in Barbaresco
"Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco" is located at the beginning of the pedestrian street housed in a church, a library for wines.
Gaja, the legendary winemaker who made Barbaresco famous, is located in the middle of the pedestrian street (but does not accept drop-ins).
Produttori del Barbaresco. At the end of the village opposite the church you will find the world's most respected cooperative Produttori del Barbaresco. They currently make nine different Barbaresco wines, all with 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The Barbaresco that is made as single vineyard wines is only made with selected grapes from the current vineyard location.
Here it works to just drop in and try one of their Barbaresco, very good, and if you like it, take the opportunity to buy.
At the very end of the village you will find "Torre di Barbaresco" which is a tower that is well worth going up (in 2025 it cost 6 euros to go up). From the tower you have a really good view of Barbaresco.

Set your GPS to the coordinates.
44.723874, 8.083913 (strada giro del mondo)
Here you pass one of the finest viewpoints over the Barbaresco wine appellation area. We usually park on the side of the road on the straight.
In order to put the wine appellation name Barbaresco on the DOCG wine, the grapes must have been grown in one of the three villages of Barbaresco, Neive or Treiso.

Neive Village
11:45 Arrival at Neive Village (ancient hilltop village)
Neive is a historic, picturesque village in Piedmont, Italy, known as one of the three most important towns for Barbaresco DOCG wine and recognized as one of the "most beautiful villages". Nieve is characterized by its medieval stone architecture, a ricetto (fortified area) on a hill, and top-notch wine producers.
The old town is small but full of character, with cobbled streets, medieval buildings and plenty of wine bars waiting to pour you a glass. It's the kind of place where you wander slowly, chat to the locals and let the day unfold between tastings and scenic views.
This is also where you'll enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants. The most highly regarded restaurants are
all of which serve traditional dishes with excellent local wines.
Afternoon Wine Tasting
On the way home we suggest a wine tasting at one of the places below.
NOTE! These usually need to be booked in advance.
Nieve - Francone. If you like fine Barbaresco wines at significantly good prices you should book this place. Not as famous as La Spinetta but oh what good wines for good prices!
Nieve - La Spinetta. If you like really fine and famous wines, book this place! La Spinetta has a very high reputation and they have vineyards in both Barbaresco and Barolo.
Loazzolo - Borgo Maragliano is a family-run winery located in Loazzolo, in Langa Astigiana, at 450 meters above sea level, in a unique and enchanting setting, among steep hills, steep slopes, towers and castles. Our absolute favorite appellation of sparkling wine Atla Langa.
You can find more about these winemakers at the link below.
Azienda Agricola Ronchi is surrounded by their own vineyards.

La Spinetta with the legendary rhinoceros.
The tasting room and the view from Borgo Maragliano, breathtakingly beautiful!
